Boarding the cluetrain

So, I finished reading the Cluetrain Manifesto, the book which inspired much of the work that Socialsquare is doing today.

I found the book to be both fun and profound, and as I read it, I noted the central points that resonated most strongly with me. I found 13 statements in all, which I’ve put into three categories: Markets, Organizations, and Conversations. Together, these succinct statements sum up the essence of the book (at least to me):

Markets

  • Markets are conversations
  • Advertising is not conversation
  • With the Internet, conversation is returning to the market
  • In order to talk in the market, you have to listen
  • Organizations

  • With the Internet, conversation is returning to the organization
  • Conversations subvert hierarchy
  • The conversations in the market and in the organizations are converging
  • Conversations

  • Human voices are heard in online conversation
  • Corporations have no human voice
  • We understand stories, not information
  • Sometimes, good enough is just perfect
  • Making errors is worth more than being right every time
  • Openness breeds trust
  • If you want a little more detail, I’ve re-mixed parts of the book (which is available on-line) into a new shorter form matching these statements and put it up on our wiki. Feel free to read it and add your own comments below.
